About
It seems Tony’s SpeakEasy is a legacy from brothers Hugh and James Meehan, respectively our great grandfather and great uncle. From 1901 to 1912 they operated the Meehan Bros. Bottling Co. from the back of their house on Seventh Street N. W. This was the house we grew up in. Their operations included bottled sarsaparilla, cherry, ginger beer, and several other soft drinks along with a fancy drink called Blood Orange. Although Blood Orange is lost to time, an enjoyable cocktail by the same name is available at your request.
The name Meehan was changed to Chero-Cola Bottling Co. in 1920 then became Nehi and moved to Akron. Records from the 1920′s indicate someone used Chero-Cola and other bottles from the Meehan Brothers Bottling Co. to conceal alcoholic beverages during Prohibition. Tsk! Tsk!
Benjamin Franklin Tracy erected this building in 1891. At the time, the Tracy Block was described as being out in a field. On September 10, 1892 count commissioners met here and granted Barberton Village permission to incorporate. City offices, the mayor, justice of the peace, and marshal were initial occupants. Through time, drug stores, book stores, doctors (next to the undertakers), and a variety of lodges and businesses have occupied this location. We’ve added our part to the legacy of the previous century. Welcome to the history!
